Short summary

Before considering Artificial Intelligence as the solution for the future or dismissing it as a passing trend, it is essential to understand how it works. AI combines powerful algorithms with data supported by computational infrastructure. Just as a world-class chef can create excellent dishes only with high-quality ingredients, AI models can perform well only when they are trained on sufficient and accurate data.

Every stage of data management, including collection, cleaning and processing, involves choices, biases and potential errors. In this presentation, Shalini will highlight the role of Data-Centric AI and discuss best practices for using AI in a responsible, ethical and effective way.

Speakers

Mariarita De Luca is a research technologist at Area Science Park in Trieste, working in the Data Engineering Laboratory of the Institute for Research and Technological Innovation (RIT) within a digital infrastructure for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Trained as a bioengineer, she earned a PhD in Mathematical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, where she developed and studied mathematical models applied to biological problems. She later researched large deformations in smart materials. Alongside her research activities, she developed expertise in research project management, Open Science practices and FAIR research data management.

Shalini Kurapati is an entrepreneur, researcher, speaker and trainer specialising in Data-Centric AI and Responsible AI. She is co-founder of a synthetic data startup based in Turin that received the Women TechEU award from the European Commission as the best among 50 women-led deep tech startups. Her expertise lies at the intersection of technology, policy and management. Shalini holds a PhD from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and specialises in transparency, privacy and fairness throughout the data lifecycle. She is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional Europe (CIPP/E). She describes herself as Indo-Piedmontese and enjoys exploring the Alpine trails, culture and food of Piedmont in her free time.
