Short summary

Did You Feel the Earthquake? is one of the longest-running citizen science projects on the web. Transparency in procedures and the sharing of results in real time have been key factors in building a strong relationship between science and citizens.

Drawing on more than 25 years of experience, this webinar will show how the system has provided significant benefits both for researchers and for the public.

Speakers

Elena Giglia is Head of the Open Access Project Unit at the University of Turin. She is active in national and international Open Science working groups and participates in several Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects. She contributed to the Italian Ministry of University and Research committee that prepared the National Open Science Plan. She was also a member of the ANVUR working group Open Access and new indicators. She regularly participates in national and international conferences on Open Science and is active in training and outreach activities.

Patrizia Tosi is a Senior Researcher at the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and works on the study of seismicity. In 1997 she created a website to collect observations from citizens about the effects of earthquakes and has since focused on analysing the resulting data. The large number of questionnaires submitted through the Did You Feel the Earthquake? website has enabled her and her team to publish innovative research on earthquake effects, seismic wave propagation and their interaction with buildings. Through public engagement activities and educational programmes with schools, she has consistently highlighted the importance of collaboration between citizens and scientific research.
