Agenda

14:30 – 14:40 Connection opens & welcome remarks by Mariarita de Luca
14:40 – 15:00 Presentation by Paola Corti
15:00 – 15:30 Q&A and open discussion

Overview

What are Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Education Practices (OEP)? How can they benefit teachers, students, institutions, and the general public? How do open licenses fit in with copyright, and what permissions do different licenses actually give to those who want to reuse materials?

This session will introduce the basics and use real-world examples to focus on current opportunities and open challenges. We will also discuss what kind of work gets recognized and what stays invisible in scientific literature, which often leads to missed opportunities for reusing and sustainably adapting knowledge.

Speakers

Mariarita de Luca (Moderator): A bioengineer by training, Mariarita holds a PhD in Mathematical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, where she developed and studied mathematical models applied to biological issues. She later focused her research on the large deformations of smart materials. Alongside her research, she has built expertise in managing research projects, specifically regarding Open Science practices and FAIR data management. Since July 2023, she has been working as a Research Technologist at Area Science Park in Trieste, in the Data Engineering Laboratory of the Research and Innovation Technology Institute (RIT), focusing on digital infrastructure for nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Paola Corti (Speaker): Senior Open Education Expert at SPARC Europe. As part of the European Network of Open Education Librarians (ENOEL), she helps librarians implement the UNESCO OER Recommendation. She also works as a project manager and instructional designer at METID, the Learning Innovation Unit of Politecnico di Milano. In this role, she manages international projects, designs and develops MOOCs, and contributes to professional development courses for teachers and researchers on open education and innovative teaching methods. Paola has been working in distance learning since 1998 and has been a member of the OE Global Board of Directors since 2023.

Who is this for?
