About the event

The reform of research assessment promoted by CoARA is an important initiative aimed at moving away from the inappropriate use of quantitative indicators, recognising the diversity of research contributions and valuing different career paths.

The new Italian National Chapter 2025–2027, one of the largest in Europe, provides a space for coordination, exchange and experimentation among universities, research organisations, scientific societies and public institutions.

The presentation will introduce the Chapter’s work programme, its strategic priorities and the main activities planned for the two-year period.

A key message is that joining CoARA should not be seen simply as a statement of commitment. Signing the Agreement means taking an active part in the reform process, sharing experiences and good practices – both between institutions and within individual organisations – monitoring progress and contributing concretely to the activities of the national and international community.

The success of the reform will depend on the ability of participating organisations to turn their commitments into action, work together on a long-term basis and contribute to building a more open, responsible and inclusive research assessment system.

Speakers

Elena Giglia (moderator) is Head of the Open Access Project Unit at the University of Turin. She is actively involved in national and international Open Science working groups and is a partner in several Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects.

At the Italian Ministry of University and Research, she was a member of the Commission that drafted the National Open Science Plan, which is currently awaiting publication. She was also a member of the ANVUR Working Group on “Open Access and new indicators” (2013–2014).

She regularly takes part in national and international conferences on different aspects of Open Science, including research assessment, and is actively involved in training, information and awareness-raising activities in these areas.

Paola Galimberti (speaker) is responsible for supporting Open Science policies at the University of Milan, including the University Press. She is a DOAJ editor for Italy and Germany and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of OPERAS. She has been working for many years on scholarly communication and the related costs.
